A career built on relationships

Staff Spotlight

For more than four decades, Susan Bohannon has helped dealers connect car buyers with financing, adapting to steady change while never losing sight of what matters most: relationships. Since joining The Bank of Southside Virginia in 2019, she has brought that same philosophy to the Dealer Division, working closely with dealerships across Virginia to deliver quick decisions, personal service and the kind of accessibility that’s becoming increasingly rare in banking.

What does a typical day look like for you in the Dealer Division?

The first thing I do every morning is start reviewing loan applications. In our business, turnaround time is everything. Dealers need quick decisions, and the faster we can respond, the more likely we are to earn their business.

Every day is different. Some loans are straightforward, while others require a little more problem-solving. That’s what keeps it interesting.

What makes The Bank of Southside Virginia different?

Relationships. Our dealers know they can pick up the phone and reach one of us directly. We answer questions, explain decisions and work with them to find solutions whenever we can. That’s something a lot of larger banks can’t offer, and it’s one of our biggest strengths.

You talk a lot about relationships with dealers. Why is that so important?

Many of the people I work with today are second-generation dealership owners. I knew their parents years ago, and now I’m working with their sons and daughters. Those relationships have been built over decades.

Even when we can’t approve a loan, it’s important to explain why. That honesty and communication helps build trust, and that’s how you keep relationships strong.

What do you enjoy most about coming to work each day?

Honestly, when we’re busy. I love talking with dealers, helping structure loans and finding ways to make deals work. This has never just been a job to me; it’s something I’m passionate about. After all these years, I still enjoy coming to work every day.

And what keeps you motivated?

I love what I do. When I came to BSV, I told everyone I’d probably stay about five years. Now I’m going into my seventh year, and I still don’t have any plans to retire.

This bank feels personal. We work as a team, we support each other, and we genuinely care about our dealers and our customers. That’s what makes this such a special place to work
