The First Hello at BSV

Staff Spotlight

When you call The Bank of Southside Virginia (BSV), the first thing you'll hear is a friendly, familiar voice on the other end of the line. That voice belongs to Anne Hale, receptionist at BSV's Central Office, and a key part of what makes banking here feel personal.

For nearly 12 years, Anne has been connecting customers with the people and answers they need, making sure every call starts with a real conversation, not a recording. In this staff spotlight, Anne shares what it means to be "the voice of BSV," why human connection still matters, and how a caring team culture shows up in even the smallest moments.

How do you think about this very front-line role?

I take it seriously, but with a smile. I want people to feel welcomed and appreciated right away. Whether they're calling with a question, a concern, or just need to be pointed in the right direction, my goal is to make that connection quickly and smoothly. I like to think of myself as a people connector.

What surprises callers the most when they reach you?

That I'm a real person. Many people expect an automated system, so when they hear a live voice, there's often a little laugh or moment of relief. If someone is dealing with a problem, that human connection really helps break the tension.

What does a "day in the life" look like?

It's never exactly the same, and that's part of the fun. I answer incoming calls, help direct customers to the right department, support management, and assist with things like board meeting logistics. Some days are quiet, others are very busy, especially around holidays, but every day is about helping people.

What's your favorite kind of call to receive?

When a customer calls back just to say thank you. They'll often praise the employee who helped them, and those calls are such a gift. It's wonderful to hear how much our team means to the people we serve.

You've worked in customer service your entire career. What makes BSV different?

The caring. It's genuine, from how we treat our customers, to how we support our communities, to how we work together as a team. BSV has more than a century of history built on relationships, and you really feel that trust and commitment every day.

What is one word to describe the BSV team?

Caring. And I'd add one more: fun. We share a lot of laughs behind the scenes, and that creates a positive environment. When people enjoy working together, it shows in how they serve customers.
